The Estate by the Elderberries has a remarkable namesake…

Our 9 acre grounds are graced with an abundance of wild Elderberry bushes. A wonderful gift of nature!  For centuries the blossoms and fruit of the plant have been a mainstay at European kitchens. The berries got preserved in late summer with wine and spices and brought to the table during hunting season to accompany roasts of duck, venison and other game.

Grateful for all things natural and healthy we were excited to launch the career of the Elderberry by christening the estate after the plant. Now our own kitchen (and Spa) is featuring this little know fruit in all its versatile glory…

Erna's Elderberry House, named for the elderberry bushes covering the surrounding grounds, was the first phase of proprietress Erna Kubin-Clanin's dream - The Estate by the Elderberries.

"I have the simplest of tastes, I only want the best." These words, compliments of Oscar Wilde, can be found over the kitchen door at Erna's Elderberry House Restaurant on the grounds of Château du Sureau. They seem to sum up the exquisite experience of dining at Erna's Elderberry House and the adjacent Château, where the vast culinary talents of Executive Chef Gunnar Thompson now reign supreme.

The restaurant, with its European country-estate atmosphere, is divided into three lovely dining areas, each adorned with antique French provincial furnishings, magnificent tapestries and original oil paintings. A stately terrace with a commanding view of the Sierra Nevada Mountains adds to the fabulous ambiance.

Erna designed and constructed this highly acclaimed restaurant in 1984 and served as the guiding chef and owner. Her daughter, Renee-Nicole Kubin, a renowned sommelier, designed the award-winning wine list. Then Erna decided to build on her dream and to open Hotel Château du Sureau, Sureau being French for elderberries.

The entire restaurant or one of our lovely dining rooms may be used for a private lunch or dinner party.

Dress Code: Gentlemen will feel most comfortable in a blazer and tie, although slacks and a button down shirt are quite appropriate. Ladies, you now have an excellent excuse to buy the perfect pair of shoes to match your favorite evening or cocktail dress.
